Bengali Cholar Dal with Coconut | Narkel diye cholar dal

Bengali Cholar Dal with Coconut (Narkel diye Cholar dal) is a traditional Bengali dish. This warm and mellow sweet-savoury cholar dal loaded with coconuts and raisins is bursting with flavours and is amazingly delicious. Perfect Bengali festive dish when paired with phulko luchi.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Chana dal (Bengal gram dal) washed and soaked 7-8 hours or over night
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup Coconut pieces
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 tbsp Raisins
  • 2 tsp Sugar

Cholar dal Tempering

  • 2-3 Dried red chilli
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 1 inch Cinnamom
  • 5-6 Green Cardamom
  • 6-7 Cloves
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Hing
  • 2 tbsp Ghee

Instructions

  • In a pressure cooker add the soaked chana dal along with 2 cup water and salt and pressure cook for 2 whistles. The chana dal should be soft but not mushy. It should still retain the shape. The dal will be thick at this point.
  • Add the turmeric powder and 1 cup of water and bring it to a slow boil.
  • Meanwhile in a small pan heat 1 tsp on medium heat of ghee and fry the coconut pieces until golden brown. Take it off the heat.
  • In the same pan add the rest of the ghee and temper it with bay leaves, dried red chilli, cinnamon, cardamoms, cloves, cumin seeds and hing.
  • Tip in the tempered ghee to the chana dal and mix well.
  • Add the fried coconut pieces and raisins along with 2 tsp of sugar/sweetener to the dal and give it a mix. Check the seasoning add salt or sugar if required.
  • Take it off the heat and serve it with garam garam luchi/puri.
