Crispy Green Chutney Fish Bites

Green Chutney Fish Bites is a crispy and delicious bite sized Indian party appetizer. White fleshy fish like basa/cod/bhetki is marinated in Indian hari chutney/green chutney made with coriander, mint, green chillies and lime juice. Coated with herbed breadcrumbs and either fried or baked until crispy and golden brown.

  • deep frying pan

  • 450 gms White Fish like Basa/Bhetki/cod cut into small 1 inch bite size pieces
  • 180 gms Bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Coriander /cilantro leaves super finely chopped
  • 1 large Free range egg
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly crushed black peppercorns
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Green Chutney ingredients

  • 1 1/2 -2 cups Coriander leaves
  • 1/2 cup Mint leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2-3 Green Chillies
  • 2-3 tbsp Lime/lemon juice
  • 1/2 inch Ginger
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp sugar/jaggery/sweetener
  • Salt as per taste


  • Add all the ingredients listed under green chutney in a mixer grinder and grind into a smooth fine paste.
  • Now marinate the fish pieces with the green chutney for at least 1-2 hour or overnight is the best so that the fish soaks in all the lovely marinate.
  • Now whisk an egg in a bowl along with some pepper.
  • In another plate combine the bread crumbs along with coriander leaves, pepper powder, some salt and mix everything well.
  • Dip the fish pieces in the egg and then roll them in the bread crumbs. Coat it uniformly and place it on plate.
  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan on medium heat. When the oil is hot add the breaded fish a little at a time and fry until crispy and golden brown.
  • Remove it with a slotted spoon on a kitchen paper.
  • Serve it hot with ketchup or more green chutney.

For Oven baked Fish Bites

  • Preheat the oven to 180° C.
  • Line a baking sheet with a foil and spray it with some oil. Then place the breaded fish on the baking sheet and spray the fish with some oil.
  • Bake it in the oven for 20-25 minutes. or until golden brown, crispy and cooked through.
  • Serve it hot with ketchup or more green chutney.
