Bengali Garam Masala is an aromatic spice mix powder made with warm and fragrant whole spices like Cinnamon, Cardamoms and Cloves. A pinch of bengali garam masala along with a sliver of ghee just takes your dishes to the next level.
Bengali garam masala is a quintessential ingredient in Bengali cuisine. It is used either as whole or as powder. You must have seen in many Bengali recipes I usually temper the oil in the beginning with these whole spices. Powder is usually added while cooking or in the end along with some ghee. I can’t imagine cooking without this particular spice blend. Each and every Bengali household has it’s unique garam masala powder recipe.
Bengali garam masala powder mainly consists of these 3 fragrant ingredients cinnamon, cardamoms and cloves. Always seen my mom making a fresh batch of this fragrant spice blend. The taste of the dishes simply transforms beautifully and takes it to the next level when you use fresh homemade spice blends.
But as I said everyone has their own unique touch, some love add bay leaves in their garam masala spice blend.
I have never ever been satisfied with the store bought Indian spice blend. They always lack the freshness and the aroma that I desire and look for. Though I keep one store bought garam masala in my pantry, since some recipes call for it. For my bengali recipes I use only my homemade fresh and fragrant spice blend.
