Green Chutney Fish Bites is a crispy and delicious bite sized Indian party appetizer. White fleshy fish like basa/cod/bhetki is marinated in Indian hari chutney/green chutney. Coated with herbed breadcrumbs and either fried or oven baked until crispy and golden brown. Make these easy crispy breaded fish bites this party season to entertain your guests.
Here we go. Back with another super dooper easy party starter/appetizer. Few days back I shared a quick Indian vegetarian starter that for sure is loved by one and all “Babycorn 65 / SPicy Golden fried babycorn“.
So this time I chose to make fish using this lovely Indian green chutney. Fish along with mint-coriander chutney is just sublime and so exotic. I kept the fish bite sized as it is quicker to cook and also looks good to serve as a party starters.
Indian Green Chutney is our very own versatile hari chutney. The amalgamation of mint, coriander and green chillies is just excellent. It is used as dips or to top our chaats, cutlets or burgers, sandwiches. Our Indian chaat is incomplete without this lovely Green Chutney.
Pairing fish and green chutney together was the best decision. It turned out so delicious with a refreshing taste. Seriously green chutney never fails to impress me.
Ingredients for Green Chutney
All these ingredients are combined together and made into a smooth paste in a mixer grinder.
- Coriander leaves
- Mint leaves
- Green chillies
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Lime juice
- Coconut (It is optional. I have not added it but you can totally throw in 1/4 cup of fresh grated coconut while making the paste)
- Sugar
- Salt as per taste
How to make Crispy Green chutney Fish bites?
These fish bites are super simple to make. Cut the fish (any white fleshy fish like basa, cod, haddock, bhetki) into 1 inch bite sized pieces. Then marinate it with the green chutney for at least 1 hour so that the fish can soak in all the lovely flavours.
Now dip the fish pieces in the egg and then coat them well with the seasoned and herbed bread crumbs and place it on plate.
At this point you can either oven bake or fry the breaded fish. Heat oil and fry these until crispy and golden brown. Serve it with tomato ketchup or green chutney.
For healthier oven baked option simply place the breaded fish and spray with some oil. Now place it in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked thru.
Can this fish bites be made ahead of time?
Yes!
Right after coating the fish with breadcrumbs simply lay it on a plate and put it in a refrigerator or freezer to be baked or fried in a day or two.
You can fry these directly from frozen until golden brown and crispy.

Crispy Green Chutney Fish Bites
Equipment
- deep frying pan
- Baking sheet
- Large bowl
- mixer grinder
Ingredients
- 450 gms White Fish like Basa/Bhetki/cod cut into small 1 inch bite size pieces
- 180 gms Bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup Coriander /cilantro leaves super finely chopped
- 1 large Free range egg
- 1/2 tsp Freshly crushed black peppercorns
- Salt as per taste
- Oil for deep frying
Green Chutney ingredients
- 1 1/2 -2 cups Coriander leaves
- 1/2 cup Mint leaves
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2-3 Green Chillies
- 2-3 tbsp Lime/lemon juice
- 1/2 inch Ginger
- 2 Garlic cloves
- 1 tsp sugar/jaggery/sweetener
- Salt as per taste
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients listed under green chutney in a mixer grinder and grind into a smooth fine paste.
- Now marinate the fish pieces with the green chutney for at least 1-2 hour or overnight is the best so that the fish soaks in all the lovely marinate.
- Now whisk an egg in a bowl along with some pepper.
- In another plate combine the bread crumbs along with coriander leaves, pepper powder, some salt and mix everything well.
- Dip the fish pieces in the egg and then roll them in the bread crumbs. Coat it uniformly and place it on plate.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan on medium heat. When the oil is hot add the breaded fish a little at a time and fry until crispy and golden brown.
- Remove it with a slotted spoon on a kitchen paper.
- Serve it hot with ketchup or more green chutney.
For Oven baked Fish Bites
- Preheat the oven to 180° C.
- Line a baking sheet with a foil and spray it with some oil. Then place the breaded fish on the baking sheet and spray the fish with some oil.
- Bake it in the oven for 20-25 minutes. or until golden brown, crispy and cooked through.
- Serve it hot with ketchup or more green chutney.
